Frequently Asked Questions

Why might I need a massage?

Massage therapy is a great way to deal with emotional or physical stress. Do you often suffer headaches or aches and pains - perhaps in your shoulders or back? Do you hear your joints clicking away as you move? Do you find tension is preventing you from achieving your best? Perhaps you find the little things are irritating you more than they should, or perhaps you just struggle to unwind and relax at the end of the day? All of these issues and many more can benefit from massage therapy and regular massage is a great preventative treatment and very beneficial to overall health and well being.

What should I expect for my first massage session?

At your first session Sarah will require you to fill out a consultation form and will discuss with you any relevant information regarding your health and what you hope to achieve from your massage (for example to relax, to de-stress or to focus on a particular ache or area of tension). You should allow an extra 10-15 minutes for this. You can prepare for this by downloading the consultation form and filling it out before your appointment.

Sarah will set up the couch, towels and equipment as necessary. For this you need to make sure there is a suitable space available to fit the couch and a little room all around for Sarah to work. For your own comfort try to ensure the room is nicely warmed in time for your treatment and if you would like, feel free to put some music of your choice on quietly in the background or light some candles to create a comfortable atmosphere and help you relax through your treatment. You do not need to provide your own towels as Sarah will supply these, however if you wish to use your own simply mention this prior to the treatment.

During your treatment make yourself comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session and others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

Is massage always appropriate?

Massage is for most people a very safe and relaxing treatment but there are certain circumstances in which you should not receive a massage. This is why it is important to fill out the consultation form at the beginning of your session, allowing Sarah to ensure there are no contra indications to the treatment you are about to receive. Sarah can also work with you to accommodate any minor ailments or conditions that may affect your massage treatment. Certain conditions should avoid massage completely, these include:

  • Fever
  • Contagious or infectious diseases, including colds and flu
  • Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription pain medication
  • Recent operations or acute injuries
  • Neuritis
  • Skin diseases

Conditions such as sun burn, varicose veins, cuts and grazes, undiagnosed lumps, bumps, and inflammation (including arthritis) should not be massaged directly but massage can be carried out avoiding the affected areas.

Other conditions also require caution when it comes to massage and if you are currently being treated by a doctor for any on going condition or illness it is advised that you seek their approval before booking a massage treatment. For certain conditions written approval from your GP may be needed before continuing. If you are in any doubt, or have any questions regarding your massage do not hesitate to get in touch.

What oil will be used?

Sarah uses a high quality cold pressed grapeseed oil. Grapeseed is a light, plain oil and generally considered the most suitable oil for hypo-allergenic and sensitive skin as well as being suitable for those who suffer from nut allergys. If you wish to use a different oil or a pre-blended aromatic oil simply discuss this at the time of booking your treatment.
